What do you think about the NRA Basic Pistol Course (8 hr) or the NRA FIRST Step Pistol Orientation Course? And the Instructor?

I'm a 20 year military veteran who fired expert on the .38 revolver and M16 rifle but I've never owned my own firearm. The AOP pistol course not only improved my pistol skills, but more importantly, I actually understand the rules & great responsibilities of firearm ownership and am less than a month from purchasing a pistol with confidence. The instructor clearly has tons of experience (he and wife are marines...of course they do) and is definitely a subject matter expert in the truest since of the phrase. And yet, the training environment is homey and inviting (it's actually their home), and I couldn't have asked for better course to recommend for my wife and my brother and his wife to take. To top it all off, I accompanied them free of charge and received a referral fee which I didn't see coming. Shoot (pun intended), I would of gladly paid a refresher fee but getting one is a whole lot better!!!

My wife and I took the NRA Pistol Instructor course from Dwayne Chaney a few years ago. He is one top-notch squared away instructor. I would recommend taking any instructor class that he teaches as you will learn and become a better instructor for doing so.

Had a great time learning in the first step course. I feel more comfortable with shooting pistols and fee like I have the knowledge to be relaxed with my pistols technique and around guns.

My husband asked me if I would consider attending this NRA-certification class with him and I just could not disappoint him, so of course I said yes. I was really not thrilled about going because the year before we had attended a local handgun safety course and, although I learned the basics, I was still uncomfortable as I had little experience with handguns and especially because of the memory of a fatal accident that claimed the life of a dear family member. The local instructor taught his class as if everyone were familiar with the anatomy of handguns and understood the terminology. He also called out and purposefully humiliated students in front of the class, which embarrassed and irritated us all. In short, my previous instructor was completely unqualified to teach a class comprised of five women with relatively low levels of handgun experience.

This class was excellent and I’d highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about guns or shooting. Dwayne was an excellent instructor. He was knowledgeable about every aspect covered in the course and explained everything well and patiently until it was understood. Excellent class and an excellent instructor!

Outstanding course for anyone, but especially relevant for those with little or no experience with firearms. Dwayne's knowledge of the material along with his ability to instruct was apparent and represents another admirable aspect of the NRA.

I have attended a few training class over the years. This was my first time attending one of Mr. Chaney's classes. My wife and I attended the NRA Basic Pistol Class. Mr. Chaney is one of the most professional, organized, and knowledgeable instructors I have ever met. He truly enjoys teaching and cares about his students. Mr. Chaney has a style of teaching that is so natural, students don't even realize that they are learning......and learning a lot. Mr. Chaney ensures the learning environment that he provides is safe for his students and stresses safe gun handling skills during class.

I have been trained on riffles in the past but not hand guns. I am so glad that me, my son and his godmother came to this class. It taught us what we didn't know and refreshed the things we did. Great NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course!

I enjoyed taking the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course. It helped me to better operate and use my gun. I am more knowledgeable about how to be safe and protect myself and others. The instructor kept the class moving and it was very informative. As a result of taking the training, I am more comfortable with my firearms. I recommend it for anyone considering owning a firearm.
