Personal Protection In The Home
NRA's Basic Personal Protection in the Home course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law. It is much more than just a routine shooting course. It's important that participants have sufficient maturity and life experiences to be able to assess various situations and make mature decisions. Participants must be experienced shooters (shooters able to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm) to maximize what can be learned from this course. Proof of shooting experience can be one of the following: NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD 214 with pistol qualification, or passing the pre-course assessment in Appendix 2 in the PPITH lesson plans. The course includes the Introduction to Defensive Shooting, Basic Defensive Pistol Skills, Firearms and the Law (Possession, Ownership, and the Use of Deadly Force), Strategies for Home Safety and Responding to a Violent Confrontation, Selecting a Pistol for Self-Defense, Sport Shooting Activities and Training Opportunities. This is a shooting course; pistol, two magazines/speed loaders (revolver), and 98 cartridges per student.
Personal Protection Outside The Home
The NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home is an intermediate level shooting course which expose students to many new shooting techniques, this course has two portions; basic and advance. It's the decision of the student if he or she would like to receive the additional five (5) hours for the advance training. This course is not a basic shooting course, and requires advanced shooting skills. The training introduces students to the knowledge, skills, and attitude involved in safely, responsibly and effectively employing a concealed pistol for self-defense. This is an intensive course, as the student must learn and practice many diverse shooting skills in order to respond quickly and appropriately to the broad range of threats he or she may encounter outside the home. Similarly, the student must also learn and understand the unique safety and legal issues that apply when a concealed pistol is carried in public. The course covers the legal ramifications of concealed carry, including who can legally carry a pistol, when concealed carry is and is not permitted, the legal and ethical ramifications when responding to a life-threatening encounter using a concealed pistol, and the legal, moral, emotional, and social aftermath of the use of deadly force outside the home. This is a shooting course; pistol, holster, 96 cartridges for the basic portion. If the student would like to receive the advance portion also an additional 104 cartridges is required.
AOP Defensive Handgun Course
This course gives the student the necessary confidence to utilize the firearm under extreme conditions mentally and physically. Recognizing the state of mind necessary to make life or death decisions. Practical exercises in drawing from the holster, shooting behind barricades and shoot-or-no shoot scenarios using the virtual shooting ranges, and able to shoot from various body positions. The student will learn to use the firearm with the left and right hand, to fire with each finger on both hands.
